Formerly known as the St. Andrew’s Secondary School Alumni Band, the group was the brainchild and effort of the graduating batch of 1992, St. Andrew’s Secondary School (SAS). The simple desire to continue reveling in the creation of the music was the ethos of the day. Hence, with no specific obligations, the band simply performed whenever opportunities were available.
The watershed came when the band organized its very own concert, entitled, “The Saints Hallelujah”. A bold venture as it was then one of the first alumni bands in Singapore to proceed with such an endeavour. That concert hence became the first of several to come.
Today, 15 years after its inception, the ethos and spirit of the band remains. However, the band has indeed evolved with the inclusion of our fellow Saints from St. Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) and is currently known as the Saints’ Alumni Band (SAB). With the entire family of graduated Saints under one name, the SAB then proceeded with another 3 successful concerts under “The Saints Hallelujah” series. The SAB was also invited to perform at the SAJC’s reunion dinner in 2005 as recognition for our efforts in music-making even after years of graduation. Last year, the band also performed at the Esplanade Concert Hall alongside with the bands of all 3 St. Andrew’s institutions for a concert entitled, “One Family, One Flag”. This concert amalgamated the bands into one, allowing all young and old musicians to come together, thus attaining the true essence of being “One Family Unbroken”. The participation of the SAB represents the ties that string together the old and the new, the past and the present.
Music demands not only an exposition at concerts but at all times and localities. Just as the band has developed and matured, the experiences gained have also broadened. These experiences were gleaned from enjoyable presentations at several public venues such as Borders Bookstore, Fort Canning Green and so forth. Such performances though less numerous as compared to school days, retained their flair for entertainment and captivity of the spirit of the music!
The Saints’ Alumni Band today witness a membership of Saints that have gone on diverse pathways, only to be brought back home by the calling of the music of the old. The SAB will always serve as an avenue back to where music resides – home.
